International fossil week celebration kicks off at the University of Jammu

JAMMU, Oct 18: The P.G. Department of Geology at the University of Jammu has ushered in a week-long celebration dedicated to the fascinating world of fossils. Fossils, the remnants of ancient life on Earth, hold a vital place in our cultural and scientific heritage. They offer invaluable insights into the planet's history and the ever-evolving biodiversity that has graced our world.
The International Fossil Day, initiated to revive global awareness about fossils and the importance of preserving them, has been embraced by the Palaeontological Society (PSI), headquartered in Lucknow, India. From October 16th to October 21st, 2023, the International Fossil Week is being celebrated, with the Department of Geology at the University of Jammu taking a pivotal role by organizing a captivating exhibit of Fossils, Rocks, and Minerals. This event has seen active participation from students representing schools and colleges across the Jammu region.
The Geology department at the University of Jammu proudly showcases a treasure trove of significant fossil discoveries. These include the skull of an elephant, elephant tusks, teeth, and even body parts of rodents. Additionally, there is an array of invertebrate fossils like trilobites. These extraordinary specimens offer a captivating journey through Earth's history, unraveling the mysteries of life's ancient forms.
