| Congress MLAs told to support NC candidates for RS poll | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, FEB 5: All the Congress MLAs have received strict instructions from the party high command that they should ensure that the two NC candidates, Dr Farooq Abdullah and Mohammed Shafi Uri, win the Rajya Sabha election. The election on the two seats is scheduled for February 13.Two Congress candidates, Saifuddin Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad, have won the two seats and their win without a contest was to be formally announced tomorrow, the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers. Congress spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, today said “party MLAs have been told to be present on the day of polling and ensure that the two NC candidates get their full support”. He said for the Congress, which shares power with the NC, the victory of Farooq and Mohammed Shafi was as important as the win of the two Congress candidates. Sharma said that the Congress and the NC have decided to share power without any preconditions and for sustaining this ruling coalition the leaders of the two parties have to work together and avoid harbouring misgivings against each other. One senior Congress MLA said that “we have been asked to vote for Mohammed Shafi of the NC and we are trying to rope in some independent MLAs so that both Farooq Abdullah and Shafi got elected to the Rajya Sabha.” On the other hand the PDP leadership too has been engaged in winning the support of some fence sitters among the members of the Assembly whose vote could ensure success of the party candidate Syed Bukhari.
