J&K job scams demand accountability: Harsh Dev Singh calls for transparency
10/22/2023 12:11:31 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 21: In response to recent revelations by the Chief Secretary about job scams in Jammu and Kashmir, Harsh Dev Singh, Former Education Minister and State President of JKNPP, called for strong punitive action against the Ministers and Bureaucrats responsible for these irregularities. He urged for full disclosure of all backdoor appointments, including details such as the departments involved, the year of the appointments, and the approving authority for each case. During a press conference in Jammu, Singh expressed shock that despite the Chief Secretary's revelation of 2.5 lakh backdoor appointments, no action has been taken against any approving authority to date. He emphasized that the Chief Secretary's initiative would be truly commendable if those responsible for the scams were held accountable and punished under the law.
Singh called backdoor appointments the gravest injustice to educated youth and the highest form of official impropriety. He stressed the need for stern action and exemplary punishment for those responsible for such appointments, which bypassed proper selection processes and denied opportunities to other eligible candidates.
He revealed that the number of daily wage laborers almost doubled between 2014 and 2018, from 62,000 to 110,000, raising questions about these additional appointments during the BJP-PDP rule. Singh also pointed out irregularities in police appointments, citing the appointment of over 4,500 Special Police Officers (SPOs) through backdoor channels in 2017-2018.
The practice of rewarding officers responsible for these appointments, rather than holding them accountable, was highlighted. Singh raised concerns about widespread backdoor appointments in J&K Bank, Industries department, SICOP, SIDCO, J&K Cements Ltd, corporations, Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB), Forests, Health, PHE, Power, and various other departments. He urged the government to make these details public and emphasized the need for meaningful action. Harsh Dev Singh challenged the government to prove even a single backdoor appointment during his tenure as Education Minister, stressing that clean officials can question others. He called for transparency in revealing all backdoor appointments to the public. The former Education Minister expressed hope in the Chief Secretary's initiatives but noted the challenges in bringing the powerful figures responsible for these irregularities to justice.
