KVK promotes commercial floriculture to empower rural youth

Early Times Report

Reasi, Oct 26: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, operating under the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), is taking significant strides in promoting commercial floriculture and educating rural youths. This initiative is under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. BN Tripathi, and with the able guidance of Director Extension, Prof. SK Gupta.
Rural youths, particularly from areas affected by monkey infestations, are enthusiastically embracing the cultivation of marigold crops as a means of generating income. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist, and Head of KVK, highlighted that marigold has emerged as a viable alternative crop in these affected regions, as it remains untouched by monkey damage. KVK is actively encouraging and equipping rural youths with the skills needed for commercial floriculture, primarily through the ARYA (Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture) project.
The primary objective of the ARYA project is to foster entrepreneurship in agriculture. In areas where monkeys pose a significant challenge to traditional farming, scientific commercial floriculture is being introduced to create income and employment opportunities for rural youths.
Dr. Banarsi Lal emphasized that floriculture holds immense potential in Reasi district, Jammu & Kashmir, given its status as a hub of religious sites visited by millions of devotees annually. KVK plays a pivotal role by providing high-quality marigold seeds, along with essential technical guidance for disease and insect-pest management in floral crops. Furthermore, the organization extends its support to rural youths in understanding effective marketing strategies for floral crops.
In a bid to maximize the potential of floriculture, KVK also guides rural youths in the recycling of waste flowers, opening up new income and employment avenues in the district. This holistic approach not only boosts economic prospects for the region but also empowers the rural youth to actively participate in the agricultural and economic development of their communities.
