Lecture on ‘Confluence of Science with Yoga’ Enlightens Students in Jammu

Jammu, Oct 29: The Central Govt Pensioners’ Welfare Association, Jammu (CGPWA), took a remarkable step towards enhancing students’ knowledge by organizing the first lecture on Medical Science and Yoga at BALGRAN, a charitable home for destitute children in Channi Rama, Jammu. Dr. S. C. Puri, a former Director Grade Chief Scientist of CSIR, now known as IIIM, delivered a one-hour lecture on the ‘Confluence of Science with Yoga.’
Dr. Puri commenced the lecture by introducing and discussing research studies on medical science and Sahaja Yoga. He highlighted the significance of ‘Kundalini,’ an evolutionary, feminine energy representing the essence of evolution, which, when awakened, nourishes, balances, and purifies. Kundalini is said to reside in a latent form within every human being, primarily in the sacrum bone, in three and a half coils. When awakened properly, it ascends through the central channel, cleansing and integrating all the chakras, ultimately manifesting as a blissful sensation on the head and hands, leading to self-realization. Dr. Puri emphasized the importance of daily meditation to maintain this state of mind.
The lecture also delved into the benefits of Sahaja Yoga, including its ability to promote calmness and composure while reducing stress and tension. Moreover, it was mentioned that Yoga could help individuals overcome detrimental habits such as smoking, drinking, and wandering eyes, fostering the development of a much-needed value system encompassing ethics and morals. Dr. Puri also discussed the concept of ‘Vibratory Awareness,’ an ability to perceive the state of the subtle body within.
Dr. Puri provided insights into the subtle energy system, which comprises the Inner energy (Kundalini), three energy channels corresponding to the nervous systems in the body, and seven primary ‘chakras’ or energy centers that align with the main nerve plexuses in the spinal column. He elaborated on the roles of the left, center, and right channels (Ida nadi, Pingala nadi, and Sushumna nadi, respectively), highlighting their synchronicity in integrating and balancing inner energy.
The seven primary energy centers, as explained in Ayurveda, were elucidated as follows:
1. Mooladhara Chakra - Pelvic plexus
2. Swadisthana Chakra - Aortic plexus
3. Nabhi Chakra - Solar Plexus
4. Void (Bhavsagara) Ocean of Illusion
5. Heart Chakra - Cardiac Plexus
6. Vishuddhi Chakra - Cervical Plexus
7. Agnya Chakra - Optic Chiasm
8. Sahasrara Chakra - Limbic Area
Dr. Puri contrasted Sahaja Yoga meditation with western medical practices, highlighting the tendency of super-specialization in the field of medicine. In this system, doctors often treat specific parts of the body independently, neglecting the holistic view of the patient’s health. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of considering psychological, social, and environmental factors in a patient’s illness, which are frequently overlooked. Dr. Puri noted the growing use of tranquilizers and sedatives, which can be harmful and habit-forming, reflecting the impact of stress and strain in modern life.
Dr. Puri also drew a connection between meditation and neuroscience, underscoring the benefits of mental silence for the brain. Research findings have shown that mental silence, experienced through Sahaja Yoga meditation, is associated with a protective effect on the entire brain.
To conclude the enlightening session, a meditation session was conducted, engaging approximately 120 students and staff. The Secretary of BALGRAN, V K Raina, graced the occasion with his presence, making this initiative a valuable and enlightening experience for all in attendance.
