| Cross cultural practices- workshop underway at JU | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 6- International Centre for Cross Cultural Research and Human Resource Management (ICCCR&HRM), Faculty of Management Studies, University of Jammu hosted the 2-day HR Conference on Cross Cultural Management Practice and Research at University of Jammu. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest, while Prof. A Ahad M Osman Gani from Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technical University, Singapore was the Guest of Honor and the Key Note Speaker for the function. Over 150 delegates including academicians, practitioners, scholars, students and members from the civil society attended the conference. Prof. A Ahad in his key note address discussed his research work titled “Factors affecting International Managers Adjustment and Performance: Implications for Research in Cross Cultural HRD”. While discussing the reasons for increased need for International and Cross Cultural HRD, he said that increasing global competition, rapid transfer of technology, decentralized organizations, changing employee demographics, and complexity in overseas duties are the driving forces. He presented the model of International HR and highlighted the drivers of successful expatriation. While discussing the emerging global research interest in the domain of “Cultural Intelligence” he said that the four facets of Cultural Quotient are Knowledge, Strategy, Motivation and Behavior. Prof. Varun Sahni in his address said that the fundamental drivers in world politics- the impulses to survive, to prosper and to be oneself- are universal in the sense that they transcend culture. He raised three important questions: Why is culture important? How should one approach an alien culture? Why is cross cultural communication so difficult? Discussing insights from the leading international scholars, he said that research in the domain of cross cultural management is critical and can have long term implications for the benefit of organizations and society at large. He complimented the team of ICCCR&HRM for organizing the conference in the contemporary theme. Earlier, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Director, ICCCR&HRM in her welcome address said that the new changing economic and political environment manifests in the demands of international perspectives and cultural implication implies that human capital, creativity and innovation provides the basis for succeeding. She further said that the Centre has entered into a MoU with Technical University, Cluj Napoca, Romania and intends to start a Certificate Course in Cross-Cultural International Management. Prof. B P S Sehgal, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu in his presidential remarks said that cultural and social values need to be understood and that Indians have more flexibility in understanding Cross Cultural Management. Prof. Keshav Sharma, Director, The Business School also spoke on the occasion. Prof. J R Dhotra, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies presented the formal vote of thanks while Anil Gupta, Faculty of the Business School conducted the proceedings. During the day two technical sessions were held. Aruna C Newton, Head, Design and Research, Infosys Leadership Institute, Bangalore spoke on “Bridging the Cultural Divide in a Flat World – The Challenges”. Prof. Rajen Gupta, Management Development Institute, Gurgaon spoke on theme “Relevance of Culture in a Globalized World”. Prof. Kanika Tandon Bhal, IIT, Delhi spoke on “Cross-Cultural Issues in Affect, Cognition and Behavior: Impact on People Management” and Prof. Anup K Singh, Dean, Corporate Relations, IMI, New Delhi spoke on “Culturally Competent Manager”.
