Early Times Report
POONCH, Oct 30: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Poonch, operating under the Directorate of Extension, SKUAST-Jammu, has conducted an awareness program in the village of Mangnar as part of the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture Project (NICRA). The event aimed to educate farmers and public representatives about the significance of drought-tolerant crop varieties to address the challenges posed by climate change.
The program was carried out in alignment with NICRA's objectives and under the expert guidance of Dr. B.N. Tripathi, the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, and Dr. S.K. Gupta, Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu. The NICRA Project seeks to promote agricultural practices that can sustain production and productivity in the face of a changing global climate, a vital concern for India as it strives to ensure food and nutritional security for its growing population.
Dr. Ajay Gupta, Senior Scientist & Head, emphasized the importance of adopting improved and drought-tolerant crop varieties along with appropriate management practices to enhance the resilience of agriculture in vulnerable environments. He pointed out that the relatively low productivity in rainfed agriculture is often linked to the unavailability of crop varieties suitable for the region. Therefore, there is a pressing need to introduce drought-resistant varieties in rainfed areas to ensure better agricultural returns.
Drought-tolerant seeds offer farmers an opportunity to use natural resources more efficiently and cultivate crops with reduced water requirements. Additionally, they contribute to food security during drought periods. Dr. Gupta encouraged participating farmers to follow the recommended package of agricultural practices to achieve good crop yields.
As part of the program, 15 quintals of drought-tolerant wheat seeds, including varieties such as VL 907, VL 2014, VL 2015, and PBW 644, were distributed among 75 farmers for the establishment of Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) in their fields. The farming community of Mangnar village expressed their gratitude to KVK officials for selecting their village and providing both seeds and essential technological knowledge in a timely manner, recognizing the significant benefits these efforts will bring to the local agriculture sector. This initiative serves as a vital step in building climate resilience and securing agricultural sustainability in the region.
