Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Nov 2: The Government Degree College Neeli Nallah in Udhampur recently organized a three-day Crafts Demonstration Awareness Programme as part of the District Level Gandhi Crafts and Weaves Mahaotsav. This initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Handicraft Service Centre in Udhampur, aimed at promoting traditional crafts and creating awareness about their significance.
The program was successfully conducted under the guidance of Professor Hans Raj, the Principal of the College, and commenced with a keynote address by Surinder Pal, Senior Assistant Director of the Handicraft Service Centre in Udhampur. Pal emphasized the importance of such awareness programs in preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship.
Professor Hans Raj, in his welcome address, highlighted the role of handicrafts in generating employment opportunities within society, especially in rural areas. Handicrafts are not only culturally significant but also contribute to economic growth. They provide job opportunities even with minimal capital investment and are in high demand both locally and internationally.
Throughout the three days, various experts and artisans imparted their knowledge to the students. Ms. Deepa Soni discussed artistic designing, Sh. S.S. Baloria covered Basholi painting, Ms. Ramneek Kour delved into handlooms, and Ms. Shepali Sharma shared insights into Chamba embroidery.
The second day of the program involved practical demonstrations, with students from the college participating enthusiastically in various arts such as Basholi painting, clay art, and Chamba embroidery.
The program's final day culminated in a competition to evaluate the students' newly acquired skills. In the Basholi painting competition, Manik secured the first position, followed by Mahida Mir in second place and Priti Bharti in third. In the clay art competition, Shruti Dogra and Rushi Dogra claimed the first position, while Parul Verma and Sheriya Sharma secured the second position, and Varun and Rashu Devi took the third position. The winners were honored with prizes for their exceptional craftsmanship.
The event witnessed the presence of all staff members, and it played a pivotal role in enhancing awareness about traditional crafts and their importance in generating livelihoods and preserving cultural heritage. This initiative by GDC Neeli Nallah Udhampur and the Handicraft Service Centre is a step towards fostering a deeper appreciation of traditional arts and crafts.
