Retired employees of Erstwhile JAKFED await overdue dues, as 36 pass away

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 4: In a distressing situation, retired employees of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation (JAKFED) continue to face uncertainty and financial hardship as they await the release of their outstanding retiral dues. Despite a high-level committee confirming the liabilities owed to retirees and other creditors, the government has been slow to take action, leaving many retirees struggling for years.
The government of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (UT) appointed a Liquidator in 2019, consisting of a high-level committee of finance experts chaired by the Director General of Finance. In February 2022, this committee submitted a comprehensive report to the government, outlining the pending claims of over 280 retired JAKFED employees. This report also identified the assets that could be liquidated to address these liabilities.
While the government has taken steps to address some financial matters, such as liquidating a loan liability of Rs 24.00 crores in favor of the JCC Bank on behalf of erstwhile JAKFED, it has failed to act on the critical issue of releasing the pending retiral dues of the retirees.
Of particular concern is the revelation that the government has placed Rs 8.50 crores in the Liquidator’s account, earmarked for partial payment of retiral dues. This substantial amount has remained untouched for many months, causing significant distress for retired employees who have been tirelessly seeking their due entitlements for an extended period.
The delay in addressing the retirees’ claims is deeply troubling, and it is made more poignant by the fact that 36 retirees have tragically passed away in the last 6 to 7 years while awaiting resolution of their financial claims. The situation has left the surviving retirees anxious about their own financial future.
In light of this pressing matter, it is imperative that the government is reminded of its responsibility to address the grievances of these retired JAKFED employees. A public appeal through press publications seeks to shed light on the struggles of these individuals and implores the relevant government authorities to take immediate action to redress their grievances.
The retirees emphasize that time is of the essence, as further delay may result in more unfortunate situations where individuals pass away without seeing their rightful claims resolved. It is a stark reminder that once the opportunity to address these issues is lost, there is no way to recover what has been lost.
