EARLY TIMES REPORT

RAJOURI, Nov 6: Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Vikas Kundal, today chaired a crucial meeting to review the functioning and achievements of the Social Welfare Department in the district. The meeting served as a platform to assess the various schemes and initiatives of the department aimed at the welfare of the general public.
During the meeting, it was informed that the department has been steadfast in its commitment to welfare, with an impressive tally of 47,685 beneficiaries currently benefiting from a range of programs. Among these beneficiaries, 34,003 individuals are receiving old age pensions, while 4,392 widows are availing widow pensions and 9,290 persons with disabilities (PCP) are beneficiaries of different schemes.
The Social Welfare Department is also actively involved in the implementation of several scholarship schemes, such as pre-matric, post-matric, and merit-cum-means scholarships for minority students, further enhancing access to education and promoting inclusivity.
Notably, the department has demonstrated its dedication to the specially-abled community by conducting 7 camps this year alone to assess the needs of 645 individuals. In the previous year, 264 prosthetic aids were distributed to enhance the mobility and quality of life for these individuals. Moreover, 216 motorized tricycles have been provided to specially-abled persons, significantly improving their mobility and independence.
The department has also shown an admirable commitment to social welfare with the approval of 1,567 cases under the State Marriage Assistance Scheme (SMAS). This scheme plays a pivotal role in assisting financially disadvantaged families during matrimonial events, thereby promoting social equality.
Furthermore, 249 cases have been sanctioned under the militancy pension scheme, ensuring that those affected by conflict receive the support they need. The department is also committed to raising awareness on social welfare schemes and combating drug abuse, with a dedicated drug de-addiction center established in the district. The Deputy Commissioner underscored the significance of effective implementation of welfare schemes and directed the department officers to ensure that the benefits reach those who need them most. This meeting served as a testament to the commitment of the district administration to social welfare and its unwavering support for the marginalized and vulnerable segments of society.
