Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 7: The Department of Commerce at Govt. College for Women, Bhagwati Nagar, organized an essay writing activity on the theme "Role of POCSO in protecting children from Sexual Offense" under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Meeru Abrol, the college's Principal. This event was part of an awareness program on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The activity was part of a series of events to celebrate Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) under the theme "My Constitution My Pride."
The primary objective of this program was to raise awareness among students about various aspects of the POCSO Act, including the services available, statutory bodies, institutional care, and non-institutional care. Prof. Gagan Jyoti, the Head of the Department of Commerce, provided insightful information on the POCSO Act of 2012. She educated the students about recognizing "good touch" and "bad touch," understanding "good secrets" and "bad secrets," and also shared child helpline numbers.
In addition to the essay writing activity, an awareness lecture on the topic "Anti-ragging laws in India" was conducted. Dr. Preeti Salathia, Assistant Professor in Commerce, delivered the lecture, shedding light on the concept of ragging, recommendations provided by the Raghavan Committee, the Prohibition of Ragging Act 1997, Punishments (as per UGC, 2009), and measures to promote discipline. In accordance with UGC instructions, Anti-Ragging Day is observed on August 12th every year to spread awareness about the harmful effects of ragging. Approximately 50 students actively participated in the event, engaging in discussions, sharing their personal experiences, and committing to abstain from any form of ragging.
