Will rebuild Ram Temple if voted to power: BJP
2/7/2009 11:38:53 PM

Nagpur, Feb 07: In a statement meant to target its core Hindu vote bank, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday vowed to rebuild the Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
"Jahan tak Ram Janambhoomi ka sawal hai, koi ma ka lal bhagwan Ram me hamari aastha aur nishtha ko diga nahi sakta (No one can shake BJP's faith and reverence to Lord Ram)," party president Rajnath Singh said in his inaugural speech at the two-day National Council meeting that began today.
Rajnath's statement led to chants of "Jai Shri Ram" from several of the assembled gathering consisting of thousands of party leaders and workers.
Addressing party workers, Singh said that if voted back to power, the NDA will establish a fast track court to expedite proceedings to resolve the Ayodhya temple issue. Singh further said that BJP is waiting for the opportunity to build the Ram Temple. He further said that LK Advani is the only prime ministerial candidate of BJP.
The Ayodhya issue is hard for BJP to ignore as this was the foundation on which it built its political empire. On December 6, 1992, the members of BJP, RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya as it was allegedly built over a temple of Lord Ram.
Riding on the Hindutva wave, the BJP appeared in the national consciousness when it gained a stronghold in Uttar Pradesh helping it soar its tally in the Lok Sabha as well.
It may be noted that over the years, BJP was being seen as getting soft on the temple issue and toning down its hardline approach. This has resulted in faultlines between the saffron party and its parent body, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
