NC calls for simultaneous assembly, parliament polls in J&K
11/7/2023 10:44:42 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 7: The Provincial President of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), Rattan Lal Gupta, has urged the Election Commission of India to hold the Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir simultaneously with the upcoming Parliamentary elections. Gupta criticized the present government for its failure to address the multiple problems faced by the people of J&K, emphasizing that installing a popular government in J&K is the only solution to these issues.
He made these remarks during a meeting of the JKNC Schedule Caste Cell held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan in Jammu. The meeting was chaired by Vijay Lochan, Chairman of the SC Cell, and was attended by party functionaries from Jammu and Samba Districts.
At the start of the meeting, the Provincial office bearers, District, and Block Presidents of the SC cell apprised the senior party functionaries of the various problems faced by the Scheduled Caste (SC) community under the present government, with no one in the administration paying attention to their issues.
Gupta, the chief guest, called attention to the ongoing "Back to Village" program, pointing out that the conditions and issues facing the people in rural areas have not improved. School buildings, water supply, electricity, medical facilities, and the problems of farmers and unemployed youth have not been addressed, and previous promises to villagers remain unfulfilled during the previous four phases of the program.
He expressed his concern that the administration's failure to restore democracy in J&K has not instilled confidence among the people, emphasizing that the government could have easily achieved this by restoring democracy. Gupta questioned the Election Commission of India, asking why Assembly elections cannot be held when Parliament elections can be conducted. He demanded the immediate restoration of democracy in J&K through elections.
Vijay Lochan criticized the present government for failing to secure the rights of the SC people in J&K. He claimed that the rights of the SC community were always protected under previous National Conference-led regimes. Lochan pointed out that the National Conference brought and implemented laws providing land to tillers, benefiting 90% of SCs and deprived class people. Under the Land Reforms Act, 90% of the beneficiaries were SCs and depressed class people.
Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Provincial Secretary of JKNC, encouraged party cadre to prepare for upcoming elections and ensure the party's success. He emphasized that only the National Conference can provide social justice to SCs and other deprived community members, urging them to strengthen the party and support Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. Ahmed also called on the party cadre to strengthen the party at the grassroots level.
Prominent party members and leaders attended the meeting, including Rakesh Singh Raka, Vice President of the Central Zone, Satpal, Krishan Datt, District President Samba SC Cell, Jatinder Singh, District President of Jammu Rural B SC Cell, and many others.
