| Another jawan posted at Leh ends life | | |
CHANDIGARH: Army jawans seem to be finding conditions in Leh so inhospitable that they are increasingly succumbing to the idea of giving up on life than work there.
A day after a jawan posted there ended his life by hanging himself at his cousin's place in Sector 22, another jawan of the same company shot himself in the wee hours of Tuesday at the transit camp near Ramdarbar.
The Sector 31 police station officials said Siddappa Kamapi (20) had reported to the camp on Monday after his leave ended.
He hails from Belgaon district of Karnataka and did not leave behind any suicide note, leaving Army authorities and the police wondering over the reasons behind the extreme act.
"His turn to fly to his post near Leh was to come in a few days," a police official said. He was assigned guard duty between the shifts of 11 pm to 1 am and 5 am to 7 am. At around 5.15 am, he asked a colleague on duty with him to fetch some water, and meanwhile shot himself in the middle of his head.
"Jawans especially find it tough to adapt to the demanding nature of their job in hard postings like Leh," an official said.
On Monday, Anshul Thakur, said to be posted in same company as Siddappa, had hanged himself. He was supposed to take flight to his post in Leh. He had left behind a suicide note, which mentioned that he could not adjust to this world. |
