Health Minister trophies among gun shooters in Akhnoor

JAMMU, FEBRUARY, 08 –Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has stressed upon the officers to create awareness among the masses about various Centrally-sponsored schemes so that benefits of these schemes percolate down to the deserving at the grassroots level. The Minister was addressing a huge public gathering at Akhnoor town today.

Stating that lack of awareness results in faulty implementation of these novel schemes, Mr. Sharma said the administration would be made more transparent and accountable for effective delivery mechanism.

In order to make administration accessible, Mr. Sham said a team of officers would camp in every Panchayat to ensure action on the development needs of the people, adding that action plans were being formulated according to priority and with the involvement of locals.

The Minister said that camps would be organized for quick disposal of the old-age and handicap pensions and benefits under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY).

On the occasion, he asked the officials of Horticulture department to explore possibilities of covering maximum area, especially dry-belt, under orchard cultivation where under handsome incentives are available to the farmers. He also asked the people to come forward and take benefits of various facilities available with the department.

Later, the Minister distributed cheques amounting to Rs. 2.43 lakh among 70 beneficiaries as incentives under Horticulture Technology Mission on the occasion.

Director, Horticulture, Jammu, Mr. Jia Lal Sharma, Chief Horticulture Officer, Jammu, Mr. C. L. Raina and other sectoral officers were also present on the occasion.

The Minister also witnessed gun shooting competition, organized by All India Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial, in association with J&K Rifle Association and National Association of India, at Tanda Akhnoor.

Stating that there was no dearth of talent in the State, the Minister called for organizing more events of the kind in the State. He said that proper nurturing and encouraging environment is needed to give a platform to the budding players, adding that though gun shooting is not so popular in our State, but after the gold medal winning performance by Abhinav Bindra at Beijing Olympics, the game has gained popularity among the youth. He said that a shooting site would be identified in Akhnoor area for local youth.

Later, Mr. Sharma distributed trophies among the shooters who excelled in their category.
