| Employees set for showdown; KAS officers offer breather | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 8: With no arrangement of funds yet to meet their demand, over four lakh employees are once again gearing up for a showdown with the government even as the Finance Minister Abdullah Rahim Rather has taken the KAS officers on board and they have pulled out of the agitation for implementation of the pay commission report. Since Monday is a holiday, the employees are all set for strike on February 10 and 11 and this time it is likely to be more vigorous as both faction factions of Employees Joint Action Committee and different other unions and organizations have joined hands to come on a common platform for the pay issue. The government has though hold out assurance to the employees that their pay hike issue will be addressed soon but there is no time frame. There is a financial implication of more Rs 3500 Crores and the government is in fix on arranging this fund. While employees of lower rungs, accounting for a strength of more than four lakhs, are gathering strength for complete strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, the government has taken the KAS officers completely on its side who have expressed willingness to give government time. A delegation of KAS Officers Association met the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather in connection with implementation of recommendations of 6th Pay Commission Report and enhancement of retirement age. Rather appreciated the role of KAS Officers who are determined to maintain cordial relations between employees and the Government. The delegation assured Finance Minister that KAS Officers are satisfied with the role which Government is playing for implementation of 6th Pay Commission in the State and enhancement of retirement age, adding that the association has not participated in previous strike call of January 28 and shall not participate in future also, adding that the association has full confidence in the Government for implementing the pay report. The delegation demanded that Commission report should be implemented before the end of the current financial year so that from the first day of the next financial year, the employees are able to draw their salaries under Sixth Pay Commission grades. They said that KAS officers are working hard for maintaining cordial relations between employees and the Government. The Association also appealed other Non-Gazetted Employee Associations to believe in the assurance from the Finance Minister, adding that the Association shall be meeting Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah as well for the purpose. Meanwhile, different employees unions from both regions of state also including members of two factions of Employees Joint Action Committee have got united and framed a state level organisation under the leadership of senior trade union leader Mohammad Khursheed Alam. Leaders of the state body urged the employees to observe complete strike in all the departments throughout the state on February 10 and 11 and criticised the government for forcing the employees to adopt agitational path. The EJAC has also resolved to make the two day strike on February 10 and 11 a grand success by holding massive protest demonstrations in all 22 districts of the State. "It has been resolved that the employees and workers of Jammu and Kashmir will make the two-day strike a grand success," EJAC said in a statement after a day-long conference of Employees and Workers. The EJAC statement said on the strike days, all offices, institutions, public sector undertakings and autonomous bodies in the State will remain closed.
