NC offers lip service to fire victims, party leaders see it as photo opportunity
Dal Lake blaze

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 13: Instead of arranging relief for the fire victims, who lost their house boats in a devastating blaze last week, National Conference is playing politics over the issue.
Pertinently, three tourists from Bangladesh were charred to death in a major blaze in a houseboat on the famous Dal Lake on Saturday while eight people were rescued. Houseboats worth crores of rupees were reduced to ashes in the blaze.
A few NC leaders visited the fire victims in Dal Lake on Monday and expressed solidarity with them. “These NC leaders could have taken some relief material along with them and distributed it among the victims,” said an observer. He said that visit was aimed at “availing a photo opportunity” and then coming with a press statement to get some publicity.”
After the visit National Conference issued a press statement stating: “While it is regrettable that tourists lost their lives, a thorough investigation without causing unwarranted harassment to any of the boat owners should be carried out,”
“We request the Jammu and Kashmir administration headed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to immediately offer low-interest loans to the houseboat owners affected by the fire in the Dal Lake. These owners should be allowed to rebuild their boats, considering the significant impact on their livelihoods,” the statement added.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The people from nearby areas are providing all the possible relief to the fire sufferers and the administration has lent a helping hand but the rich political parties of Kashmir like National Conference have nothing to offer to the victims except lip service.”
He said, “The administration has provided all possible assistance to the victims and it would also help them in rebuilding their houseboats but politicians doing nothing at all will be recorded.”
