| Congress ready for polls: Sonia | | |
New Delhi, Feb 08: Sounding the poll bugle, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday declared her party was "ready, prepared and confident" to face the coming Lok Sabha elections and that it will seek another mandate to rule on the plank of "solid and substantial achievements" of the UPA government. "We ask the people to reaffirm their faith in us so that we can continue to provide each and every Indian a life of security, dignity and prosperity. We are ready. We are prepared. We are confident," Gandhi said at a conclave of district and block level party office-bearers in New Delhi. In a speech that virtually kick-started the Congress election campaign, Gandhi said, "As we approach the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, we are here today to resolve together to fight every battle, wage every struggle, make every sacrifice to secure a renewed mandate from the people of our country." Differentiating between the 2004 polls, when the Congress had gone to the electorate on "the basis of its pledges.....and age old values of secularism and communal harmony", Gandhi said the party would now seek a mandate on "the strength of its performance". "Our accomplishments in office have been solid and substantial," she said. The UPA chairperson said this time Congress would ask for votes to "continue and expand the numerous programmes that we have launched in employment, education, health, nutrition, social security, housing and water supply."
