Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi highlights the connection between drugs, politics, youth distress in Kashmir

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 15: Dr. Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, the Chairperson of Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board and Minister of State, took part in an Anti-Drug Awareness Program organized by the Non-Governmental Organization Save Kashmir at Exhibition Ground, Srinagar. The event drew the participation of school children and youth from various backgrounds.
During her address, Dr. Andrabi emphasized that the menace of drugs in Kashmir was introduced by forces aiming to manipulate youth into participating in violent activities such as stone-throwing and killings for over three decades.
She pointed out that the drug trade served as a primary source of funding for the violence that engulfed Kashmir during this period. Dr. Andrabi accused those in power of supporting this destructive industry and exploiting the drug trade for their political gains, resulting in the ruin of the region’s youth.
Dr. Andrabi revealed that she has been consistently raising her concerns about this catastrophic situation for more than a decade. However, individuals with political interests chose not to intervene, allowing the drug network to flourish. She highlighted the magnitude of the issue, stating that although the government has taken action this year by arresting thousands and filing numerous cases, the problem persists.
Dr. Andrabi stressed the need for collective efforts at the individual level to eradicate this deep-rooted network from society.
The chairperson urged religious leaders, intellectuals, and the media fraternity to play significant roles in addressing the issue. She called upon the public to organize small-scale programs at the community level to mobilize youth against the drug menace.
The event’s organizer, Arish Bhat, welcomed Dr. Andrabi, acknowledging her continuous efforts in creating awareness about the drug menace in Kashmir.
