Natrang’s ‘Girgit’ Presents Hard-Hitting Satire on Socio-Political System | | | Early times Report
Jammu, Nov 19: Natrang’s weekly Theatre series ‘Sunday Theatre’ showcased the Hindi play ‘Girgit,’ directed by Neeraj Kant, at Rani Park in Jammu. Adapted from a Russian short story by Anton Chekhov, the play proved to be a hard-hitting satire on the present socio-political system. The adaptation was deeply rooted in the soil of Jammu, and its dramatic structure resonated with the audience, making them feel as if they were watching their own story unfold. With each staging, the play incorporated highly contemporary and situational aspects, adding to its beauty and relevance. Natrang has consistently strived to showcase highly relevant political and social satires, and today’s play demonstrated itself as a shining example of that commitment. The play ‘Girgit’ revolves around a dog and a corrupt police officer who changes colors like a chameleon with every change in the situation, regardless of right or wrong. The stage action begins when a dog bites a pickpocket who seeks help from the officers to apprehend the owner, but to no avail. A passerby suggests that the dog belongs to the local Minister, having seen a similar dog around his bungalow. Acting on this clue, the officer starts beating the pickpocket for teasing a respectable dog, claiming that a dog of the minister cannot bite unless forced to do so. As the beating continues, another man in the crowd points out that the local minister only keeps pointer-hunting dogs, leading to the dog being thrashed and the search continuing for its owner. The beating persists until a servant of the minister arrives, initially denying recognition but later identifying the dog as the minister’s brother’s pet visiting from Delhi. The dog is then escorted back home with full official protocol. Vishal Sharma, portraying the Police Officer, aesthetically depicted the changing colors of the central character, supported by Aadesh Dhar as his subordinate. Neeraj Kant, in the role of the senior officer, successfully portrayed the complexities of senior bureaucrats. Impressive performances were also delivered by Sanket Bhagat as the thief, Sumit Bandaral & Brijesh Avtar Sharma as the Minister’s Servant, Tarun Sharma as the Dog, and Abhimanyu Choudhary and Kushal Bhat. |
