| Barring call for Safari, prize winners untraced | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: Of thousands of prizes that were won by the ticket buyers by draw of lots in the famous Police-Public Mela, the Police Welfare Department has so far received only one call –of course, for the lead prize Tata Safari. As no claimant turned to take away keys of the cars or other gifts won in lucky draw it appears that most of the prizes have gone to small towns and far off villages where ticket buyers are yet to know about their luck. The Police Welfare department has sold more than 3.5 lakh tickets amounting to something between Rs 18 lakhs to 20 lakhs. While all ranks of Police were required to buy five tickets each, over a lakh tickets are reported to have been bought by civilians and others. Not even a single claim had been made Sunday at the venue of Mela when prized were declared. One of the winners who drove away his Maruti car was an employee of district jail who got the keys from Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda. Understanding that most of the winners may have been from rural and far off areas, the DGP has now said that winners from different far off places may collect their prizes from the district headquarters. On the directions of the Director General of Police, Mr. Kuldeep Khoda, the raffle draw prize winners of small items residing in far-off places in Valley and some parts of Jammu region, who had been asked to collect their prizes from the Police Headquarters (PHQ) here, have now been advised to deposit their tickets in the offices of respective District Senior Superintendents of Police for collection of their prizes. The necessary instructions in this regard have already been passed on to the District SSPs from Police Headquarters, a police spokesman said here today. The step has been taken for the convenience of the prize winners, who live in remote areas and are not in a position to collect their prizes from the PHQ, here. Giving details, the spokesman said the winners will be given their prizes on production of their original tickets against a receipt. These tickets will be then forwarded to the (AIG), Welfare (PHQ), Jammu, for verification and subsequently the prizes will be sent to the respective SSPs for handing them over the same to the prize winners. However, in case of persons having won four-wheelers and bikes, besides fragile items including electronic gadgetry, the same have been advised to collect their prizes from PHQ, Jammu only.
