War Wounded Foundation Rally in Nagrota: Transforming Disabilities into Abilities
11/20/2023 10:58:43 PM

Early Times Report

Nagrota, Nov 20: In a collaborative effort by the Northern Command and the War Wounded Foundation (WWF), a rally was conducted in Nagrota on November 19 and 20, 2023. The WWF, established as an NGO by Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi and Maj Gen Ian Cardozo, aims to empower war-wounded soldiers by turning disabilities into abilities.
Presently led by Lt Gen Asit Mistri (Retired), the President of WWF, retired army personnel are appointed in different geographic zones to maintain close liaison with disabled soldiers, providing support and fostering camaraderie.
The WWF has created a common platform for injured soldiers, systematically addressing issues related to their physical and mental health. A “Chair of Excellence” has been established at the USI, New Delhi, for research on matters concerning injured soldiers, with recommendations presented to the government.
The two-day rally in Nagrota included interactions in Jammu Cantonment, where 110 disabled soldiers engaged with prominent citizens and organizations of Jammu. Citizens felicitated war heroes, expressing gratitude for their sacrifices. Lt Gen Asit Mistri provided insights into WWF’s efforts, emphasizing the need to support injured soldiers comprehensively.
The rally also addressed challenges faced by injured soldiers, including mobility restrictions, the need for 24/7 help, and psychological health issues. Modified scooters were presented to 10 injured soldiers by the GOC White Knight Corps, promoting independence in their daily lives.
A symposium covered topics such as mental and physical health, job opportunities, motivation, and positivity. Initiatives by WWF include providing modified scooters, modifying bathrooms for user-friendliness, financial assistance for daughters’ marriages, supporting disabled veterans to start new ventures, and participation in sports events. War-wounded soldiers shared their experiences, showcasing their positive outlook on life through active participation in social, sports, and business activities. Plans for a helpline to provide counseling to injured soldiers were announced, receiving support from Prof (Dr) Arti Bakshi.
Col Amitabh Amit presented a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to various organizations, ex-servicemen, soldiers, and the media for their active participation. The rally’s success was attributed to the support of the Northern Command and the citizens of Jammu, demonstrating solidarity with the Indian Armed Forces.
