HP’s BJP Govt ‘gifts’ PoK to Pakistan, Aksai Chin to China
2/9/2009 11:39:16 PM

ET DESK
Jammu, Feb 9: The Bhartiya Janta Party wants abrogation of Article 370 removal so called ‘special status’ to Jammu and Kashmir for its ‘full integration with India’ but shortly ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, when such rhetoric comes in handy, a state government led by the BJP has declared Pakistan occupied Kashmir as part of Pakistan and Aksai Chin as part of China.
In what is doubtless a major gaffe, the BJP Government in the neighbouring Himachal Pradesh in its official 2009 diary has put out a map that concedes ‘inalienable’ parts of India — Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin — to its far from friendly neighbours, Pakistan and China.
Published on the inside page of the diary, the Indian National Highway Network Map does not mention the source of the map, but displays the national outline in a two-colour contrast which does not correspond with the official map of the country.
The diary carries a message from Governor Prabha Rao and chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, two of the top state government functionaries, who are perhaps not even aware that their signatures are part of such a glaring omission.
Containing contact information about all important government functionaries, which includes the governor, chief minister, high court judges, ministers, MLAs, secretaries , this official government diary was released in January this year. When contacted by a news gathering agency, chief secretary Asha Swaroop said, ‘‘It’s a gross oversight. The matter will be looked into and accountability will be ensured.’’
