| UGC team arrives, JU seeks Rs 240 Cr | | | Munish Gupta Jammu, Feb 10: The Eleven-member University Grants Commission (UGC) team arrived here today to review the progress made by the University of Jammu during the last plan period and also to discuss the parameters of the 11th five year plan proposals. On the basis of tenth year plan grant, the UGC would release the grants for the fulfillment of needed vacancies and establishment of the new departments. The 11 member team headed by the Chairman Prof. K. Rama Murty Naidu comprises, Prof. P R Sarode, Prof. Prof JV. Parabakar , Prof. Sanjay wadwah, Prof GC Pandey, Prof. P. Trimurti, Prof. S. Sandya Menon, Prof. Manjula Chaturvedhi, Prof. Nisar Ahmed S, Prof KR Iqbal Ahmed and Prof. AK Dogra from UGC. According to sources, the Jammu University has projected a plan proposal of Rs 240.69 crores for the 11th five year plan period, of which Rs 55.35crore is for buildings, Rs 66.99 crore for further development of campus, Rs 31.55crore for additional staff, Rs 15.60 crore for purchase of equipments, Rs 11.02 crore for upgrading Information communication Technology, Rs 2.64 crore for extension activities, Rs 94 lakhs for research activities, Rs 2.88 crore for purchase of books and periodicals, Rs 53.73 crores as development grants. The development of infrastructure by way of construction of additional accommodation, provision of latest equipments and appointment of staff has been categorized as the priority sectors, the sources added. As the UGC team will be here on a 3- day discussion, a series of meetings are being held by the JU authorities for giving a final touch to their budgetary proposals and other issues. A high level meet of University administrator and Deans of different faculties was convened today wherein all the arrangements regarding the UGC team’s visit were reviewed and necessary instructions issued to the departments. All teaching as well as non-teaching staff members have been prohibited to get leave during February 11-13. The visiting team which has been divided into three groups is scheduled to have a meeting with the Vice Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni here tomorrow. While talking to our correspondent, Dean Academic Affairs BPS Sehgal, who is also the in charge coordinator of the visit, briefed about several University proposals to be put before the UGC team, like development of Jammu University campus and its offsite campuses. He said various problems like infrastructure, shortage of staff and financial aid for the newly constructed campuses and the newly introduced departments like Bio- Informatics, Bio-Chemistry and the Business School would form part of the discussions with the visiting team. He further added there are several others issues that the university authorities are planning to put forth before the UGC team. He said the state government is being requested to arrange a chopper for the UGC team for their visit to Bhaderwah Campus. He said the 11 member team has been divided into three groups. While the first group would inspect Department of Faculty of Sciences, Life Sciences, Law and Commerce, the second one would have inspection of Social Sciences and Behavior Sciences Departments and the third team would be inspecting JU Management Department, DDE, Adult and Continuing Education, Health Centre, Cactus Garden, Central Library, Works Department, University auditorium, sports facilities, NSS, Boys Hostel-1 and 2, girls 1 and 2 and all other educational campuses. |
