Centre for Women’s Studies at JU Empowers Students with Gender Sensitization Workshop”

Jammu, Nov 28: The Centre for Women’s Studies at the University of Jammu conducted its 7th gender sensitization workshop as part of an ongoing series, tailored for students and scholars from the Department of Bio-Technology. The workshop, held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, featured Prof. Samridhi Arora from the Department of Home Science as the resource person.
Under the guidance of Prof. Vishav Raksha, the Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies, the program commenced with a welcoming address by Dr. Hema Gandotra, Associate Professor from the Department of Sociology and Director In-Charge of the Centre for Women’s Studies. Dr. Hema Gandotra highlighted the significance of these workshops in fostering gender awareness among the university’s students and scholars.
Prof. Sanajana Kaul, Head of the Department of Bio-Technology, emphasized the importance of such workshops in formal education and commended the efforts of the Centre. She shared instances of outreach activities conducted by the Centre for women in uneducated communities, stressing that such workshops contribute to changing individual perspectives and fostering a more inclusive society.
The key resource person, Prof. Samridhi Arora, focused on the theme “Empowering and Nurturing Girls for a Brighter Future.” She delved into the concepts of sex and gender, utilizing activities to engage students. The workshop included an exploration of gender gaps in various spheres, an overview of legal provisions, and government schemes available for girls. Prof. Arora shared her personal experiences and recommended participants to watch the documentary “Girls Rising: Nine Girls - Nine Stories of Courage.”
Enthusiastically participating students and scholars from the Department of Bio-Technology shared their experiences and posed questions, all of which were satisfactorily addressed by the resource person.
Dr. Saranjit Kaur and Ms. Kunzang Angmo, faculty members from the Centre for Women’s Studies, coordinated the workshop, with Dr. Madhulika Baghat from the Department of Bio-Technology overseeing the digital aspects. The workshop concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
