Environment Committee calls for coordinated efforts to conserve environment

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 20 – The Environment Committee of legislators has stressed the need for coordinated efforts to conserve the environment in the State for which serious efforts by different departments/agencies are required to be made. The Committee observed that whole world has shown great concern about the constant degradation of environment and its impact on the human beings and other living creatures on the earth. Therefore, it becomes mandatory for all especially technocrats to contribute their bit to conserve fauna and flora in our State so that the coming generations may not face the worse.
The Environment Committee headed by legislator Mr. Ashok Sharma met here today and discussed the issues concerning to environment and suggested various measures for its protection.
The Committee urged the Chief Engineers, PHE present in the meeting to make regular test of drinking water from different sources and even from mohalla-wise to make sure that people get the safe drinking water. The stress was laid for strengthening the existing labs with modern equipment and manpower adding that the Department should take the services of technocrats in the field. The Committee further observed that reports are frequently pouring that many water-borne diseases are occurring in different localities, the department should take long run measures to check this menace in future. The Committee also directed the concerned to make sure that all the reservoirs, sources of drinking water are completely covered.
It was further stressed that efforts should be made that agriculture land is not converted for other uses, like setting up of industries, brick kilns etc. Brick kilns and other industries should be allowed to set up only after obtaining the NOC from the Pollution Control Board and efforts should be made to close down such units who are causing pollution hazards to the inhabitants. The PCB should gear up their efforts to identify such industrial units, who have not obtained the necessary NOCs before setting up the units and causing problems for the general public and initiate punitive action against the defaulters, the Committee observed.
Those present in the meeting included legislator, Mtr. Farida Mir, Commissioner/Secretary, Forest Mr. Najam-u-Saqib, Chiarman, PCB Mr. R.D.Tiwari, Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Abdul Razzak, Director Ecology and Environment, Mr. S.M.Khan, Regional Director, PCB Mr. S.K.Sinha and others.
