Srinagar, Dec 7: Kashmir valley shivers as mercury continues to fall at most of the stations experiencing the coldest night of the season on Thursday, officials said.
The Meteorological Office said Srinagar continued to experience the season's coldest consecutive night on Thursday, with temperatures plummeting to -2.6?C against the -2.0?C recorded the previous night. It was -2.1?C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
However, the maximum temperature was recorded at 1?C?3?C above normal in Kashmir Valley on the previous day. After experiencing the season's coldest night, Pahalgam in south Kashmir, although it remained the coldest place in Kashmir valley, the night temperature slightly improved and was recorded at -4.9C on Thursday against the -5.1C recorded the previous night. It was still 1.7C below normal for the tourist hot spot, the MeT office said.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low of -2.2C against the -2.0C, and Kokernag recorded a low of -1.4C against the -0.5C recorded the previous night.
Mercury also dips in Gulmarg and settles at -2.5C against the -2.2C recorded the previous night. However, it was still 1.2C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir.
The night temperature also plunged in Kupwara and settled at -3.1C against the -2.7C recorded the previous night. It was 1.3C below normal for the border district of north Kashmir district.
MeT forecast of dry weather to continue till December 10 and generally cloudy on December 11 in Jammu and Kashmir. The night temperature is likely to see further fall during this week, the MeT office said.
