| Peace alone can fight terrorism: PDP to India, Pak | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 12: People’s Democratic Party has urged upon India and Pakistan to take bold and unprecedented initiatives for normalizing ties and maintained that peace and reconciliation is the only viable option for India and Pakistan to fight back terrorism and extremism. Regional cooperation with mutual understanding could be the best mechanism to fight back all deadly evils including terrorism, it added. In a statement issued here today, a PDP spokesperson said that the situation could witness steady improvement if both the countries tend to be non-combative in style and endeavor to work through cooperation rather than confrontation. Peacekeeping and preventive diplomacy remains essential tools to fight out terrorism. Stressing for the resumption of composite dialogue between the two neighbors, the Spokesperson said that the search for a durable and enduring peace demands action at a much deeper and more profound level and dialogue will provide the basis for resolving problems, howsoever, intricate they might be. He underlined the urgency of multi pronged peace initiatives and confidence building measures to keep the peace-process rolling which has received setback in the aftermath of Mumbai blasts. "There is also a need to concentrate on the root causes of growing extremism in the sub-continent, the illusions within the highest echelons of the strategic community in India and Pakistan need to be undone through political accommodation and diplomatic wisdom. We have to address all the bilateral problems through innovations rather than relying on conventional mindset" spokesperson averred. He asserted that "an honorable democratic solution to Kashmir problem as envisaged in Self Rule document would underscore the political values and cement the cohesiveness of Indian and Pakistani societies. This would set a valuable precedent for resolving other bilateral issues and allow India and Pakistan to reclaim moral high ground in the world affairs". He said that a resolution of Kashmir problem based on self governance would, in practical terms, meet the deep-rooted aspiration of the people of the both sides for practical unity even though borders can stay. As already agreed to by Dr. Manmohan Singh and the then Pakistani President Parvez Musharaf, the borders between two parts of Kashmir should be rendered irrelevant. "This can be done by allowing free trade, travel, and commerce between the two parts of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. This relationship can gradually evolve into a common market and free economic zone where the two parts of the state can undertake common projects of environment, tourism, power and disaster management. Slowly, the relationship between the two parts of the Kashmir can be improved and consolidated in social and cultural aspects also" the spokesperson. He reiterated his Party's resolve to pursue, with full vigor, its vision of intra-state conversion of resources and achievements of potentials between the people of the two parts of the State.
