| LC elections on March 7 | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 12: Lobbying has intensified in all major political parties for seat in the Upper House as Election Commission has notified schedule of elections for filling up 12 vacant seats of the State Legislative Council. The Election Commission of India have finalised the dates for the conduct of biennial elections to the 12 seats of Legislative Council of Jammu and Kashmir . The Notification for the elections would be issued on February 16, 2009. The last date for making nominations is February 24, the nominations would be scrutinized on February 25 while the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is February 27. Polling for all the 12 seats shall be held on March 7 and counting of votes would also be done the same day at 3 P.M. The entire process of elections would be completed by March 9. Eight seats of the Legislative Council are falling vacant due to retirement of Nassurallah of Kargil and Phuntsog Namgyal of Ladakh on March 9, 2009, Ali Mohammad Sofi of Kashmir province and Ved Prakash Gupta of Jammu province on March 16 and Amrit Malhotra, Ch. Bashir Ahmad Naz and Lal Mohammad Sabir, all belonging to Jammu province on March 9. One seat belonging to Kashmir province is already lying vacant since June 5, 2008 due to disqualification of Bilal Ahmad Khan Lodhi by J&K PDP Legislature Party leader. Further,, the Commission has also decided to hold bye-elections to fill the casual vacancies in the Council. This follows the resignation by Basharat Ahmad Bukhari, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat and Sakina Itoo, all from Kashmir province. Besides, another seat has fallen vacant from Jammu province due to disqualification of Mr. Ashok Kumar Sharma from the membership of the House by the leader of INC Legislature party on January 22, 2009.
