Essentials being airlifted as prices escalate in region

Doda/Jammu, Feb 12: On sixth day of the blockade of National Highway 1B, scarcity of essential commodities has hit the twin mountainous districts of Doda and Kishtwar and prices have escalated even as the Government started airlifting essentials to the cut off districts.
Main commodities which at present were out of stock include LPG, petroleum products, vegetables, flour and medicines. People are buying goods at higher rates. Onions which were sold at Rs 15 per kg were now sold at Rs 25 and it is not only the case of vegetables the rates of daily use commodities are sold at higher rates. When people register their protest against high rates vendors claim that administration has allowed them to charge extra from the consumers on the pretext of labour charges.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal has said that for making adequate availability of essentials and fuels in the cut off districts of Kishtwar and Doda airlifting of essential commodities, petrol and diesel has been started from Udhampur today by the Divisional Administration Jammu in collaboration with Indian Air Force. He said that on the recommendations of the concerned Deputy Commissioner critical patients are also airlifted to Jammu for treatment on daily basis.
Giving details of the airlifting, Dr. Kotwal said that nearly 4000 litres of diesel and 100 quintals of essentials were airlifted today to Doda and Kishtwar districts for further distribution by the concerned district administrations. He said that transshipment of LPG cylinders, K. oil and food grains is going at Assar where the Batote-Doda road has got sunk at Assar and sufficient number of porters and ponies have been kept available for the purpose. He said that the transshipment process is being closely monitored by the administration to control overcharging of freight and ensuring smooth transshipment of the commodities at the site. He said that on Thursday nearly 90 passenger vehicles have exchanged the passengers at the cut off site.
The Divisional Commissioner has said that joint Control Rooms have been set up at Batote, Doda, Bhadarwah and Kishtwar to monitor the situation having arisen due to the sinking of the road and facilitating the people of the affected areas.
Dr. Kotwal said that for restoration of transport on the Batote-Doda road 3 kilometer alternate road is being constructed between Assar and Baggar. Earthwork on one kilometer of the alternate road has been completed and work is apace on the remaining portion. He said that Bani-Bhadarwah road which is snow covered is being cleared and so far 20 kilometers have been cleared and remaining part of the road would be cleared in a week’s time to throw open the road for traffic to rush essentials, fuels and other commodities to Bhadarwah, Doda and Kishtwar areas.
