| HELLO, HELLO! LOTSCHUM IN LADAKH SANS TELEPHONE | | | Srinagar, Sept 20, : In today's 'information and networking' age several areas in hilly Ladakh region like 'Lotschum'–only 22 Kms from Kargil headquarters, sans telephone facility. "In spite of the fact that we, the residents of 'Lotschum', have applied for telephone connections by depositing Rs 1250 (INR) with the exchange office of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in year 1997, but more than eight years down the line, the telephonic facility remains a far-fetched dream for us," Mohammad Ishaq, the Panch of Lotschum, told 'KIP' on phone from Kargil. Mr Ishaq, the head of the area, informed that Lotschum comprises of six villages which include 'Darkeet', 'Nunamche', 'Samboh', 'Kokaste', 'Tacha', and 'Kareet'. 'Kareet', he said, is the home village of Minister of State Haji Nissar Ali. Another caller identifying himself as Ghulam Ali told on phone that 'Sheergoal' and 'Pashim', two areas falling on the opposite ends of 'Lotschum' do avail the telephonic facility but for reasons unknown "our area has been neglected". "We don't understand this discrimination at all. We hear on radio that Army by virtue of project 'Mercury Streak' understood the need of effective communication and connected Srinagar with Karu in Ladakh, but what about the locals?," Mr Ali asked. Pertinent to recall that the Indian Army connected Srinagar with Karu in Ladakh region through Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) network on October 6, 2005 for effective communication. The project was a joint venture of Indian Army, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Border Road Organization (BRO) and was completed on August 28, last year after 16 months of working time in three seasons, precisely in a period of three years. But residents of 'Lotschum' yearn for a simple telephone facility, which, as of now, seems unattainable; at least they have reasons to believe so! Claims of 'Khushaal Kashmir' are hard for them to digest. |
