Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Dec 17: In a proactive initiative towards fostering a secure work and academic environment, the Internal Complaint Committee against Sexual Harassment (CASH) of Government Degree College (GDC) Udhampur organized a comprehensive awareness lecture on "Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace." The event, held today at the college premises, aimed to empower female students with knowledge about harassment prevention and safety procedures.
The lecture, a part of the Mission for Women Empowerment during Azaadi ka Amrit Kaal, coincided with India's G20 presidency. Under the patronage of Principal Prof. Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, the CASH Committee brought in Prof. Anoksha Sharma, Head of Sociology, as the resource person for the enlightening session.
Principal Prof. Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta lauded the committee's efforts, emphasizing their significance in promoting a stress-free learning and working environment. He proudly shared that GDC Udhampur has had an impeccable record, with no reported cases of harassment to date. He expressed confidence that the college would continue to set an example for others, emphasizing a commitment to professionalism and integrity.
Prof. Anoksha Sharma, in her address, provided a comprehensive overview of various forms of sexual harassment, their aftermath, and legal remedies available. She delved into the evolving dynamics of society, gender binaries, and highlighted verbal, visual, and physical harassment issues at the workplace. Prof. Sharma cited notable cases, such as the Bhanwali Devi Case of Rajasthan and the Vishakha guidelines vs. Rajasthan Case in 1997. She underscored the importance of reporting incidents, addressing the lack of confidence and knowledge often hindering victims.
Following the lecture, an open house discussion allowed the audience to actively engage with the subject matter. Prof. Sharma emphasized the need for inclusivity in addressing harassment, dispelling myths about the gendered nature of harassers and victims. She stressed the importance of the CASH Committee considering all aspects to ensure no harassment goes unnoticed.
Dr. Anita Sharma, Convener of CASH, provided a welcome address, outlining the committee's role and the necessity of such programs. Prof. Shivi Mehra, a member of CASH, delivered the formal vote of thanks, acknowledging the active participation of attendees. The proceedings were skillfully conducted by Prof. Tania Akhter, another member of CASH.
The event was graced by the presence of Prof. BL Thakur (HOD Education), Prof. Rajni Kumari (HOD Economics), Prof. Suresh Kumar Dogra (HOD Physics), Dr. Sunil Kr. Bhat (HOD Chemistry), Prof. Shobhna Sambyal (HOD Zoology), Dr. Gurpreet Kour (PO NSS), Dr. Jasmeet Kour, along with other members of CASH, faculty, and students.
The CASH Committee's initiative marks a significant step towards creating awareness, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring a safe and respectful academic and work environment at GDC Udhampur.
