Sonia Gandhi will flag-off two prestigious projects— the international airport and extension of railway from Mazhom in central Kashmir to Baramulla in North Kashmir— from a single venue at the Srinagar airport. Arrangements have been given final shape and Sonia Gandhi accompanied by Union Railways Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel and Prof Saifudin Soz will flag off the international airport as well as the railway link to Baramulla from the airport itself. Sources said the change in the earlier schedule was made keeping in view the inclement weather conditions in the valley. The inauguration of the airport and the Railway link to Baramulla was scheduled to be held separately. Around 100 children are set to take a free-ride in the inaugural train powered by Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) engine. With the inauguration of the Manzhom-Baramulla project, the railway in Kashmir valley will get connect to 96-kilometer. Till now, the service was available on 65 kilometres from Anantnag to Manzhom. Sources at the airport said that following the inauguration of terminal building of international airport, Air India Express flight from Dubai will land at Srinagar at 1.20 pm and it will take off for Dubai at around 2.30 pm. As per the schedule, the international flights would operate once a week and will be operated on every Saturday while introduction of more flights depends upon response from the people. Interestingly, there are four aircrafts parking bays on the 12,000 feet long-runway. The new terminal building is spread over an area 19,700 sq meters and is constructed in such a manner that it would handle domestic and the international traffic simultaneously.
