| Gen-x computing: Conference at MIER | | | Jammu. Feb 14. The second edition of the National Conference on Next-Generation Computing and Information Systems (NGCIS’09) today got underway at the Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), at its Kot Bhalwal campus today. NGCIS is the first annual National Conference on Computing in J&K and organized by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the first and only department in the State accredited by the National Board for Accreditation (NBA). At a glittering ceremony, Prof. I.K Bhat, Director National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, inaugurated the conference. Prof. R.C Joshi Professor, Department of Electronics and Computer Science, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee was the Guest of Honour, while Dr. Arun K. Gupta, Director MIER Group of Institutions, presided over the function. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Prof. Renu Gupta, Director, MIER Group of Institutions, Prof. Lalit .K Awasthi, Head Computer Science and Engineering, NIT Hamirpur, Prof. R.B Patel, Head Computer Science, M.M University, Mullana and Maj. Gen (Retd.) Prof. S.K Sharma Principal, MIET. NGCIS’09 stands sponsored by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Prof. Ankur Gupta, Joint Director, MIET and Head, Computer Science and Engineering is the Convener for the conference. More than 100 researchers from all over the country had submitted their research papers to the conference, indicating the overwhelming response to the event, out of which 65 have been selected for inclusion in the proceedings. Prof. I.K Bhat inaugurated the conference by lighting the lamp of learning and releasing the proceedings of the conference. Speaking on the occasion he lauded the initiative of MIET in organizing this conference and felt that it provided the much needed platform for researchers from the academia and industry to come together and shape the future of computing. He felt happy that a national level event was being organized by a private institution in the State, since he also hails from the State. He opined that such events shall help place J&K on the national map. Earlier, Prof. Dr. Arun K. Gupta in his address expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries, industry representatives and the delegates for making NGCIS’09 a grand success. He described the Chief Guest as a dynamic leader, who has been instrumental in establishing NIT Hamirpur as a front ranking organization in the country. He felt that research is an essential component of the higher technical education and that engineering education is incomplete without research inputs. He apprised the audience that although MIET was primarily operating only under-graduate courses, where research is not an integral part, its faculty members had managed to produce over 70 research papers in the last 3 years Prof. S.K Sharma, Principal, MIET, on behalf of the institute extended a warm welcome to all the dignitaries and delegates. Giving an overview of MIET, he highlighted the achievements of the institute in its short existence, including the organization of NGCIS’09, which he felt shall further strengthen the research activities at the institute and help in promoting research in the region, especially in the discipline of Computer Science and Information Technology, where there is an acute shortage of experienced personnel. Prof. R.C Joshi, world renowned expert in Computer Science, presented the inaugural keynote address, which was greatly appreciated by the audience, especially since this was the first time that audiences in Jammu have had an opportunity to listen to an expert of More than 30 delegates from prestigious institutions across the country presented research papers on themes such as artificial intelligence, next-generation networks, DNA computing, cloud computing, ambient intelligence, peer-to-peer networks and other cutting-edge technologies. |
