Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 14: Buoyed by the massive voter participation in recent assembly elections, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi today asked separatists to take a lesson from the democratic process and join the path of democracy.
Sonia said the overwhelming enthusiasm shown by the electors in Jammu and Kashmir was reflective of their strong faith in democracy. She said the road to prosperity is possible only through peace and democracy. There was no other means to achieve this, she added. She said that people who do politics of violence, whether in Jammu and Kashmir or elsewhere in the country and belonging to any faith, were not well wishers of India. She said these elements could not deceive people who can see through their designs. The Congress President was addressing a well attended function after inauguration of the new integrated terminal building of the Srinagar International Airport and operation of the first international flight from here today
Gandhi said that the day marked arrival of 3 new gifts for Jammu and Kashmir including new integrated terminal building, rail from Mazhom to Baramulla and first international flight from Dubai. She said operation of international flights would add to new opportunities for employment and business and congratulated the Civil Aviation Minister Mr. Praful Patel and Airports Authority of India for achieving this milestone. She also expressed hope that rail link to Baramulla would add to the socio-economic development of the State and felicitated the Indian Railways for the feat.
The UPA Chairperson said that during the last several years, much progress has been registered in various sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. She made a special mention of the keen interest and support extended by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh in the development and prosperity of the State. She said though significant strides have been made in various walks of life in the State, yet many things were to be achieved. "For this, all of us have to work together", she said, adding the pending projects have to be accomplished and new ones taken up.
Gandhi said that when the entire world was going through economic recession, India was not facing much of its impact and described the policies of the Government as the main reason behind it. She said prices of diesel, petrol and LPG were reduced to provide succour to the people. She said the Government was committed to better the lot of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah said that the operationalization of international flights from Srinagar will give boost to inward tourism in the State. He said connecting Srinagar with Dubai was not a small thing as it opened up the valley for direct international flights which is bound to promote tourism, the mainstay of the State's economy. He urged the Union Aviation Minister to promote tourism in the State by operating more flights. He also asked the people travelling by air to take advantage of the low fare of Rs. 13,000 from Srinagar to Dubai and back. He said from the time of his grandfather, late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, he had been hearing about the Srinagar Airport becoming international, adding that his childhood dream became a reality today.
Omar Abdullah said it was a moment of joy for the people of the valley that rail-link has been extended to Baramulla, thereby connecting south and north Kashmir. He said he was among those people who had thought that unless the rail line was connected with the rest of the country, rail in Kashmir would only be a photo opportunity and bogies would run empty. He said people of the valley have proved this wrong as the rail was running full with passengers comprising employees, students and commoners. He said he was happy that Baramulla was connected with Srinagar and Anantnag through rail. "We are now eagerly waiting for the moment when Kashmir will be connected with the rest of the country", he said and urged the Railway Minister, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav, to speed up work on Katra-Qazigund section of the prestigious Udhampur-Qazigund-Baramulla railway project.
The Chief Minster thanked the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and the Central Government for extending wholehearted support to J&K during UPA Government and hoped that the State would continue to receive their help and support. He also thanked the UPA Chairperson for inaugurating three important projects in the valley today.
Yadav also spoke on the occasion and said that it was a proud moment for the Indian Railways as the dream to connect Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country was becoming a reality. He said the Udhampur-Qazigund-Baramulla railway link has been declared a national project and adequate funds were being made available for its completion. He said work was going on the Katra-Qazigund section which passes through difficult terrains, adding that high bridges and long tunnels were to be constructed in this section.
Yadav said that rail-link was important in a place like Kashmir where roads get blocked due to heavy snow in winter. He said inauguration of the Mazhom-Baramulla section by the UPA Chairperson will connect Anantnag with Baramulla by rail.
The Railway Minister also referred to various projects being implemented to improve connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country, adding that Rs. 13,666 crore were being utilized on these. He expressed hope that rail-link to the State would boost tourism and benefit the people.
In his speech, the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr. Praful Patel dwelt on the plans to develop aviation sector in Jammu and Kashmir and said that new integrated terminal building though small was one of the finest in the country. He said Srinagar receives ten flights daily and during summer these increase to 18. He said the air connectivity in the country has been achieved in areas not covered earlier.
Patel said that air and rail-link play an important role in the economy of a place, adding that the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh had extended full support for their development in Jammu and Kashmir and other remote areas. He said Air India will operate international flights from Srinagar once in a week whose frequency would be increased, subject to the passenger demand. He said Airports Authority of India has drawn several plans for Jammu and Leh airports also.
