| Teenager takes DGP for a ‘Maruti’ ride | | | Srinagar, Sep 20: Kashmir police received its biggest shock when it found that a ‘smart teenager’ took none other than the Director General of Police, Gopal Sharma for a proverbial ride. The teenager, who was arrested here on Wednesday, had produced a fake lottery ticket and claimed a Maruti car against it—the car was handed over to him by the DGP himself. Faisal Mirza, 17, son of Abdul Gani Mirza of Luragam Tral presently putting up at Wanbal Nowgam walked into the office of the DGP on September 4, along with a laminated lottery ticket (No. 48822-A) which he said he had purchased during the recently held Police Wives Welfare Mela. The ticket number had won the second prize, Maruti car. “The officials checked the ticket number with the counter foil and found it correct. After completing the formalities, a white Maruti Car (bearing engine No. 3645674 and chasis No. 2591222) was handed over to Mirza by the DGP,” a police officersaid. But on September 19, a head constable of the police, Abdul Rashid (belt No. 257/JKAP) from 12th battalion visited Police Headquarters, produced a lottery ticket (bearing No.48822-A) to claim a Maruti car. Shell-shocked, police understood they had been taken for a ride, and on the instructions of DGP, an enquiry committee was constituted. The investigation was conducted at a fast pace. It was found the ticket of Rashid, who is posted in Jammu’s Reasi area, was genuine and that the teenager had produced a fake one to claim a car. Police team rushed to Tral in south Kashmir to trace Mirza where it learnt that Mirza along with his family was putting up at Wanbal Nowgam, on the outskirts of Srinagar. A police team, said the official, rushed to Wanbal on Wednesday morning and told Mirza that he had wrongly received a white car instead of red, and asked him to come along with them, so that his car can be changed. Mirza followed the cops in his brand new car. He was instantly detained in Police station Shaheed Gunj. During questioning, he confessed that after seeing the results of a raffle draw, he conceived an idea about coming up with a fake ticket, which he later produced to claim a car. The teenager has been booked under Sections 420/468 and is presently lodged in Police Station Kothi Bagh. “The incident has shocked the higher police officials,” the police officer admitted. “Now a committee would be formed every year on Police Wives Welfare Mela for awarding the prize distribution after proper crosschecking.”
