| Self-defence a necessity, inspiration: Khoda | | Thousands join Civil Defence Run | | Early Times Report JAMMU, FEBRUARY 15 - The Director General of Police (DGP), Mr. Kuldeep Khoda today called for greater involvement of common masses, student community and educational institutions in civil defence awareness for achieving better results.
Mr. Khoda was interacting with the media persons during the flagging off "Walk-cum-Run" at Auxiliary Headquarters, Gandhinagar, here this morning.
The Walk-cum-Run, organized by Jammu and Kashmir Civil Defence & Homeguards Organization, was a huge success in which thousands of men, women and children participated. Besides, senior police officers, civil defence wardens, volunteers, students from various educational institutions from Jammu region also participated in the 3-km run, which started from Civil Defence Headquarters, Gandhinagar at 7.15 a. m. and concluded at Bagh-e-Bahu, near Har-ki-Pouri at 8.15 a. m. En route, several people also joined in and participated in the run.
A large number of police personnel including officers also participated in the run which inspired a number of wayside onlookers to join in.
Exhorting youth to train themselves in civil defence activities as well as inspire others, the DGP said that in the present scenario there is a dire need for personal combat for saving lives and minimizing damage to property. He said that civil defence is vital since it keeps up high morale of public.
The DGP said that to spread awareness about civil defence, a website has also been launched by the organization. He also said that civil defence contingents are taking part in several national and state-level events. Mr. Khoda said the nature of duties of the civil defence is different from that of the police, adding that it can bridge the gap between the police and public. He said civil defence wardens, volunteers, officials and others associated with the organization always remain in the forefront during crisis situation. Giving details, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Dilbagh Singh said presently more than 30,000 civil defence-trained volunteers are working across the State at various district headquarters as well as major towns. Mr. Khoda distributed prizes among the winners of first three positions in the run. A light refreshment was also served to the participants on the occasion. The function concluded with a mock shows – how to save life and property during fire accident and water tragedies - held near Har-ki-Pouri Mandir, in which thousands of people witnessed preventive measures to be taken in firefighting situations.
