J&K earns Rs 75 crore through export of vegetables
9/20/2006 11:45:10 PM

September, Sept 20: Jammu and Kashmir has changed its image as a perennial importer of food items by exporting 16,500 metric tonnes of vegetables and earned Rs 75 crore last year, said an official spokesman.

The vegetables, exported to different parts of the country, were produced by the state agriculture department, the spokesman said after a meeting chaired by Minister of State for Agriculture Aijaz Ahmad Khan yesterday.

Last year, 6.15 lakh hybrid vegetable seedlings were raised in departmental nurseries. Of these, 2.92 lakh seedlings were distributed among farmers at concessional rates, he added.

The state agricultural department covered 814 hectares of land under vegetable crops and 30 low-cost green houses were established demonstrating high yielding crops of vegetable during off season.

To increase vegetable production in Kashmir, 12 water tanks were constructed on community basis and 1,100 irrigation pumpsets were provided to farmers at subsidised rates by the state agricultural department.
