| PDP demands immediate desilting of major irrigation canals | | |

Srinagar, Feb 16- PDP has asked the government to start desilting of irrigation canals in valley immediately, besides embankment of all major and minor canals in order provide irrigation facilities to the farmers well in time when agricultural activities re-start in the valley during spring season commencing from the month of March.
In a statement issued here today PDP leader and General Secretary Youth PDP Bashir Assad said that farming community across the valley is apprehensive that the irrigation department might start desilting process in latter months disadvantageous to the agricultural activities in valley and affecting the overall agricultural produce due to delicate irrigation facilities.
"Financial implication and procedural impediments toll heavily on farming community and it is imperative that the government starts timely action to give respite to the farming community in the valley" Assad said.
Bashir Assad also demanded sufficient stock of manures, fertilizers and pesticides besides activating enforcement wing of agriculture/horticulture to stop incursion of substandard pesticides and fertilizers in the valley. "In order to boost the agriculture and horticulture in the valley the concerned departments should maintain vigil on sale and stock of substandard pesticides and fertilizers" Bashir Assad said adding that use of inferior pesticides and fertilizers by the innocent farming community in the past has made the crops/fruits prone to deadly diseases like rice blast in paddy fields and red -mite in fruits casing irreparable loss to the farmers and owners of fruit orchards.
