Hailstorm damages crops in J&K

SRINAGAR: A hailstorm lashed Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening causing extensive damage to standing crops prompting government to rush officials to affected areas to assess losses.

Paddy, Maize and fruit crops at Bajjan, Sonawari, Sumbal, Pattan, Preng and Bandipora areas in Baramulla district were extensively damaged following the hailstorm, official sources said.

State Horticulture Minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir and Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed visited storm-hit areas and assured all possible help to victims.

Mir directed officials to assess the damage and submit a detailed report to government in this regard.

Peerzada assured the residents that government would take all steps to provide succour to the affected.

The hailstorm destroyed apple orchards and paddy fields in several parts of the valley.
