| Understanding sovereignty, security requires critical introspection: Expert | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 16- The Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu today organized a public lecture on the topic "Sovereignty and Security: Some Theoretical Considerations" by Professor A.K Ramakrishnan of Jawaharlal Nehru University today. Professor Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu presided. Professor Ramakrishnan in his public lecture pointed out that understanding the concepts of sovereignty and security today requires a critical introspection of many of the conventional notions. "The role of the nation-state is undergoing radical transformation in the contemporary era. In the neoliberal context, nation-state sovereignty is minimized in the realms of markets etc. But its national-security functions are remoulding it in more powerful ways," he said Prof. Ramakrishnan stated that withdrawing legal rights of citizens from many areas of our lives in the context of fighting the so-called "war on terror" is creating big challenges for democracy and human rights. He underlined the fact that the idea of modern sovereignty is currently challenged by innumerable developments like global environmental issues, international migration, ideas of human rights and humanitarian intervention, the processes of globalisation and the military extension of the power of the global super power in other territories. He also stated that we need to question hegemonic notions of sovereignty and security. Professor Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, talked about Asia as one area that is living in a moment of political modernity. "In Asia sovereign territorial states are trying to perfect sovereign territoriality. This is a different process from Europe and Africa," he said. Professor Sahni was of the opinion that if this was not addressed properly, a war-like situation was a possibility. ‘We cannot do away with the passage through modernity in our march towards a new post-modern context’, he remarked. Dr. Mathew Joseph C., Director (In Charge), DSRS, welcomed the gathering and Dr. Mohammad Monir Alam, Senior Assistant Professor, DSRS, proposed the vote of thanks.
