| Urban poverty & slums | | DES holds state level seminar | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 16- The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, in collaboration with National Building Organization (NBO), organized a state level workshop-cum consultation on "Database & MIS on Urban Poverty, Slums, Housing and Building Construction" here today. The main objective of the workshop was to familiarize the staff members drawn from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Offices of Regional Joint Director (E&S), District Statistics and Evaluation Offices, Municipalities, Local Bodies and Public Works Department about the maintenance of data, required for planning of housing strategy at the national and state levels, as per the newly developed software "Building Related Information and Knowledge System" (BRICKS). Gopal Prasad, Deputy Director and V.Ethiraj, Research Officer (NBO) from Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation form New Delhi were the resource persons for this workshop. G.A. Qureshi, Director General, Economics and Statistics, J&K in his introductory speech said that though housing and building construction is an important sector of the economy, yet the information available about this vital sector is meager to meet the requirements of various aspects of housing policy and programs. He further stressed the need for maintaining a sound and updated database on housing and building construction, which is critical for assessment of housing stock, housing conditions, housing and building activities and shortage of houses .in the state. He also impressed upon the participants of the workshop to immediately start working on the requirements of the scheme to generate the required data. Giving details about the sectoral contribution of Housing and Construction to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), the Director General, E&S, who was Chief Guest on the occasion, disclosed that Housing and Construction Sector is contributing around 15% to the GSDP and its share over the period has shown an increasing trend, which is a healthy sign for the growth of the state economy. He also said that the government spending on Housing and Urban Development has been on the rise. The total plan outlay for the 11th Five Year Plan on these sectors will be over Rs. 1100 crore in the state, witnessing 72% step up in the spending over the 10th Plan. Gopal Prasad, Deputy Director and V. Ethiraj, Research Officer (NBO), Resource Persons from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, speaking on the occasion highlighted the need for building construction statistics at the national and state levels as it helps in estimating the supply and demand of construction material equipments, labour, requirement of financial resources, evaluation of housing programs, framing appropriate land use policy for orderly and planned growth of the cities and planning of infrastructure like water supply, electricity and other basic amenities.
