| Jammuties discriminated in the matter of distribution of ration: alleges Manhas | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 17- Regretting that it was the PDP-Congress coalition which missed no opportunity to discriminate with the Jammu province now the present NC-Congress alliance too, is following the same policy. It is not mere an allegation but can be well judged from just one more burning instance, BJP State General Secretary Shamsher Singh Manhas said, while addressing a press conference here today. Manhas said that the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department is not implementing the government decision regarding distribution of ration according to the official scale. The official scale during the previous coalition was approved at 13 kgs i.e. 8 kg atta and 5 kg rice, ration per member in a family in the state. The department followed the scale in full in Kashmir but in Jammu it released only 40 per cent (3 kg 200 grams) and 33 per cent of rice (1.5 kg) only per member in Jammu province. He said the consumers were expecting some relief from the new dispensation which took over in January 2009 and added that in its first cabinet meeting, the government decided to distribute full scale quota through CAPD (i.e 13 kg without any cut) but unfortunately the first quote released after cabinet meeting shocked the people. The CAPD affected 33 per cent cut in atta and 18 per cent in rice. The department did not do so as far as consumers of Kashmir are concerned. Manhas expressed surprise as to how a person can survive on 4.700 gms (3kg 200gm atta + 1.5 kg rice) of ration for 30 days? Such a policy has also added problems not for the consumers only but the poor ones also as they can't afford to purchase atta and rice from the open market which is costlier than that of government supply. Manhas asked the CAPD to immediately release the ration as per official scale in Jammu. He said the BJP will not tolerate such policy of discrimination and declared to launch massive agitation in case the CAPD failed to ensure full scale supply at the earliest. Manhas also criticized the CAPD for not entering the names of new born babies in the ration cards since the year 2001 and demanded registration of all such cases soon.
