| | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, FEB 17: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today carried out a seven-and-a-half hour marathon tour of various parts of Srinagar city and its adjoining areas to take a firsthand review of the ongoing developmental projects. The Chief Minister's visit to the city and its suburbs was different in a way that no traffic was disrupted and there was free access to people willing to meet him. The Chief Minister had issued specific instructions to the Divisional Administration not to stop traffic while he crisscrossed city and adjoining parts so that commuters are not put to any unnecessary trouble. The Chief Minister was freely accessible to the people during his day-long hectic tour which saw him visiting various areas. This was for the first time in years that a Chief Minister had such a detailed non-stop inspection of development projects in the summer capital city and the suburbs. Abdullah carried out extensive visit to Srinagar, Ganderbal and Budgam districts and took stock of various ongoing projects. He set deadlines for completion of these projects and issued instructions to the concerned agencies to strictly adhere to the set timeframes. The Chief Minister started with visiting Jhelum beautification project and later inspected upcoming building of New Museum Complex, additional 200-bedded block of Lal Ded Maternity Hospital, additional blocks of Dental College, residential block of Haj House at Bemina, Kralpora Water Filtration Plant, Rangil Water Supply Scheme, Rawalpora-Tengpora and Fruit Mandi-Bypass drains, besides other projects and issued instructions for early completion of these projects. The Chief Minister reviewed the ongoing works on river Jhelum banks from Sonawar to Dubji Ghat, Maisuma. He was told that over 90 per cent work on the project has been completed. A total of Rs. 12 crore is being spent on anti-erosion scheme of the river, out of which Rs. 9.29 crore have been utilized. Under the beautification works so far, Rs.4.72 crore have been expended out of the sanctioned Rs. 13.55 crore. Around 458 illegal encroachments have also been removed from the river, the Chief Minister was told. Abdullah also visited the near-completion New Museum Building at Lal Mandi which is coming up at a cost of Rs. 30.74 crore. He went around the building and took stock of the finishing touches. He issued instructions to the concerned agencies to speed up work. He also asked the concerned department to take immediate measures for protection of rare artefacts of the State. Later, the Chief Minister reached Lal Ded Maternity Hospital and inspected the ongoing work on the additional 200-bedded block of the hospital, which is coming up at a cost of Rs. 15.86 crore. So far, an expenditure of Rs. 1.5 crore has been made on the under-construction project. Besides the general ward for patients, the building will have separate rooms for doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff of the hospital. The Chief Minister also visited the under-construction additional block of Dental College, Srinagar which is coming up at a cost of Rs. 29 crore. He was told that six of the nine blocks will become operational by April this year. The remaining three blocks will be completed by July, 2009. The work on the 400-seated Auditorium will be completed by May this year. Mr. Abdullah was told that a recreational block at an estimated cost of Rs.71.66 lakhs is being taken up shortly. Mr. Abdullah also inspected the ongoing renovation of Ali Masjid at Eidgah. He called for completion of ceiling of the Masjid within the stipulated timeframe
