Strike put off for a day, employees to wait for cabinet decision

Jammu, Feb 18: The Joint Consultative Committee, an amalgam of various employees Unions, Wednesday deferred their fresh three-day strike call by a day after four-hour long meeting between a five-member cabinet sub-committee and 31-member team of employees ended "successfully" this afternoon.
"After our successful meeting with cabinet sub-committee, we have decided to postpone the fresh strike call of three more days from tomorrow by a day," Abdul Qayoom Wani, senior member of JCC and president of a faction of Employees Joint Action Committee said.
Wani said that the employees would wait till the state cabinet, meets tomorrow, officially sanctioning what has been agreed during the meeting.
Giving details of the agreement reached between the JCC team and the cabinet, Khursheed Alam, another senior member of JCC and the President of other faction of EJAC said that benefits of the sixth pay panel recommendation would be extended to the state employees from July this year.
"While the effect would be made from April 2006, the government has agreed to implement the sixth pay panel benefits from July this year. The arrears which are due would be adjusted in the GP fund," Alam said.
Apart from the pay commission recommendations, the government, he said, has greed to rectify pay anomalies as per the recommendations of S L Bhat committee, conversion of COLA—cost of living allowance— to public sector employees on pattern of DA.
On amendment and enhancement in the Wage Act including increase in wages of the daily wagers and casual laborers, Alam said that the cabinet sub-committee has agreed to increase wages from Rs 60 to Rs. 100.
On the regularization of contractual/consolidated employees, the government decided to constitute a committee that would formulate a policy at par with RT teachers under a time-bound manner, the JCC member added.
On the enhancement in the retirement age from 58 to 60, the government, he said, has deferred the decision "for now."
