Dry spell leaves Gulmarg snowless
Tourists disappointed, hotel bookings canceled

Early Times Report

Gulmarg, Jan 21: The absence of snow in Gulmarg has left tourists disappointed as they encounter a dry spell in the popular tourist destination.
The lack of snow has led to a negligible rush of visitors, with many expressing their dissatisfaction with the current conditions.
One tourist shared, "We didn't see any snow in Gulmarg. We went to Drang and saw a frozen waterfall. We are disappointed."
Another mentioned that it was their first visit to Kashmir, and they plan to go to Sinthan Top in the hopes of finding the desired snowfall.”
The impact of the dry spell is evident, as a hotelier revealed, "Many tourists have cancelled their bookings," reflecting the economic consequences for local businesses heavily dependent on tourism.
Highlighting the unusual weather patterns, it was noted that in January, 4 to 5 feet of snow would typically accumulate in Gulmarg. However, the current conditions paint a starkly different picture, with the absence of snow-clad peaks leading the area to resemble a desert rather than the winter wonderland it is known for.
The disappointment among tourists and the economic challenges faced by local businesses underscore the impact of climate variability on tourism-dependent regions, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and adaptation strategies in the face of changing weather patterns.
A 65-year old tourist guide said, “I don’t remember seeing Gulmarg snowless. This is the first time in many years that we haven’t seen any snow. People associated with the tourism industry are facing difficult times as there are no customers.”
He said in January month at least used to have 6 to 7 feet snow. “This year we are not seeing even a single inch. Ski-slopes have turned into a barren land,” he added.
