| Omar underlines his development priorities | | |

JAMMU, FEBRUARY 19 – During his two-day tour of the twin capital cities yesterday and day before, where he took firsthand review of the key projects, Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah has conveyed a strong message that he has a pulse on all issues of developmental importance.
Going beyond close-door meetings, the Chief Minister has himself visited project sites and set deadlines for early completion. He wants administrative machinery to work in top gear so that ongoing projects are completed on time and fruits of infrastructure development are extended to the people.
His marathon seven-hour visit in Srinagar and adjoining districts of Ganderbal and Budgam saw him minutely review the pace of work at Lal Ded Maternity Hospital, Srinagar Dental College, New Museum building, Kralpora Water Filtration Plant, Rangil Water Supply scheme, Rawalpora-Tengpora and Fruit Mandi-Bypass drains as well as beautification of Jhelum embankments.
Similarly, the Chief Minister reviewed ongoing works at the winter capital where he inspected construction of Migrant Township at Jagti and Bus Stand at Khanpur in Nagrota, PSC building at Reshamnagar Colony, Haj House, Sitlee Water Filtration Plant and Divisional Commissioner's office at Rail Head. He also reviewed up-gradation of Jammu Medical College and development and beautification of Tawi embankment.
At both the places, Mr. Abdullah set time limit for completing all the projects within the stipulated timeframe.
When the Chief Minister addressed his maiden press conference in the meeting hall of the Civil Secretariat on January 9, 2009, he had made his agenda of governance very clear. Ever since, he has been in a stand-up-and-deliver position by taking review of various departments, wooing private sector for investment to create jobs, dashing to New Delhi and apprising Centre about State's needs and also meeting deputations from remote areas and assuring them of personal intervention and issuing instructions for providing them succour.
As he embarks on a mission to catapult J&K to a position of being proudly called a role model State, he knows that a job well begun in the State is still required to be taken to logical conclusion.
During his visit to the additional blocks at Lal Ded Maternity Hospital at Srinagar and Super-Specialty hospital at Jammu, the Chief Minister has laid special emphasis on creation of additional infrastructure in the health sector. He has already issued instructions to make all under-construction Primary Health Centres in the State functional by March 31 this year, besides framing of a new drug policy for the State. In fact, the very first surprise visit that Mr. Abdullah carried out after assuming charge as Chief Minister was that of Lal Ded hospital. His visit there has resulted in the improvement of the hospital administration and delivery system.
The Chief Minister has also an eye on achieving self sufficiency in water and power sectors. During his visit to Sitlee Water Filtration Plant, the Chief Minister issued instructions for early completion of the project so that Jammu city becomes self-sufficient. The total water requirement of Jammu city is 37 MGD and once the Sitlee Plant is commissioned after completion of Phase III, additional 5.4 million gallons of drinking water would be available for two lakh people of old city.
Likewise, on his recent visit to Srinagar, the Chief Minister stressed the need for harnessing full power potential of 20,000 MW in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 16,400 MW stands identified. He also laid emphasis on the significance of the power sector in the industrial and economic growth of the State.
The development of industrial sector also remains on top of the agenda of the new Chief Minister. Dovetailing it with creation of better job prospects for the skilled youth of the State, the Chief Minister has also been successful in getting 18 new polytechnics that will hone the skills further and enhance employability of educated youth in the private sector.
Not only has Mr. Abdullah succeeded in his "Kashmir Calling" mission in Mumbai recently, he has already inaugurated ESSAR Group's first BPO at Rangreth with another to be opened in Jammu shortly. The Rs.100-crore project will generate employment for over 4,000 youths.
As the Chief Minister continues his "Mission Development", we will soon see his endeavours make physical appearance across the State in form of new infrastructure so that people in all the three regions of the State benefit and live better and prosperous lives.
