NMC president urges for financial relief for govt employees in upcoming budget | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 30: Subash Shastri, President of the National Mazdoor Conference (NMC), issued a strong plea to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today, urging her to address the financial concerns of government employees and pensioners in the upcoming Interim Union Budget scheduled for February 1st. Release of Pending DA: Shastri emphasized the release of the 5% Dearness Allowance (DA) installment due from January 1st, 2024, along with the accumulated 18-month DA arrears. He highlighted the rising inflation and price hike, stressing the need for immediate financial relief for employees and pensioners. Merger of DA with Basic Pay: The NMC chief advocated for merging 50% of DA with basic pay and pension for both central and state government employees and pensioners. This, he argued, would provide long-term financial stability and address the impact of inflation. Exemption of DA from Income Tax: Shastri called for the exemption of DA from income tax, considering its direct link to rising prices and cost of living. Freeze Arrear Inclusion in Budget: He urged Sitharaman to incorporate the freeze arrears amount in the interim budget, compensating for the salary and pension freeze imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Pay Revision and 8th Pay Commission: Shastri emphasized the need to consider salary revisions based on the fitment factor as per the 7th Pay Commission recommendations. He also advocated for the immediate appointment of the 8th Pay Commission to address lingering uncertainties among government employees and pensioners. Restoration of Old Pension Scheme: Shastri advocated for the reinstatement of the old pension scheme instead of the New Pension Scheme (NPS). He cited several states like Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab that have already taken this step and urged the central government to follow suit. B-1 City Status for Jammu and Srinagar: The NMC chief requested the declaration of both Jammu and Srinagar as B-1 cities, which would increase infrastructure development and improve civic amenities in these crucial cities. Financial Support for UT J&K Daily Rated Workers: Shastri demanded a special package of Rs. 2,000 crores per annum for the regularization of daily rated workers in Jammu and Kashmir. He also called for the regularization of daily wagers who have completed seven years of service and increasing their monthly emoluments to Rs. 18,000. |
