72nd All India Police Hockey Championship kicks off with grand opening ceremony

JAMMU, Jan 30: The 72nd All India Police Hockey Championship commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Astro Turf K.K. Hakku Stadium in Jammu. The chief guest for the occasion, former Indian Hockey Team captain and President of Hockey India, Dilip Tirkey, officially declared the championship open, marking the beginning of an eleven-day sports extravaganza.
Addressing the gathering, Dilip Tirkey expressed immense joy and pride in being part of the ceremony. He acknowledged the significant contributions of police forces from different States/UTs in nurturing talented players for the Indian hockey team. Commending the efforts of Jammu and Kashmir Police in hosting the championship for the fourth time, he highlighted the historic importance of hockey in India and worldwide.
R.R. Swain, Director General of Police J&K, who was the Guest of Honour, paid floral tributes to the legendary hockey wizard Ghyan Chand at the outset of the ceremony. In his address, he praised Dilip Tirkey for accepting the invitation on short notice, emphasizing his role as a true sports enthusiast.
DGP Swain showcased the rich history of J&K Police in hosting national-level police events, listing various championships held over the years. He emphasized the commitment of J&K Police not only to sports but also to fostering unity and solidarity among the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.
The opening ceremony featured a captivating cultural program, including a march past by participating teams and regional song performances. The event also witnessed the presence of prominent personalities such as A. K. Choudhary, Spl DG Crime J&K, Surinder Kaur (Arjuna Awardee) of Haryana Police, and Shri Birendra Lakra (Olympian) of Odisha Police.
The championship, hosting both men and women categories, promises eleven days of healthy competition, fostering unity, and creating lasting memories. The tournament will serve as a platform for players from different states to showcase their talent and strengthen bonds.

Match 01: West Bengal Police vs. Telangana Police
West Bengal Police emerged victorious with an 8-1 score.
Goal scorers included Theodor-Bai, Praful, Sukhen Barman, and Susar Harshit.
Player of the match was declared Sukhen Barman for his outstanding performance.
Match 02: Puducherry Police vs. Jharkhand Police
Jharkhand Police secured a 4-3 victory.
Goal scorers included Robert Dhodray, Ajeet, and Ayub Mundu.
Ayub Mundu was declared the Player of the Match for his brilliant performance.
