Ambitious schemes launched for urban poor, city beautification: DyCM

JAMMU, FEBRUARY 20 – The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand today said that Rs. 14.25 crore would be spent on rehabilitation of 608 slum dwellings in Rajeev Nagar under Basic Service for Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme. He asked the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) to identify the land for the purpose.
Speaking at a high-level meeting of Urban Development Department, Mr. Tara Chand said that Rs. 33 crore have been earmarked for shifting 21 different slums under BSUP scheme benefiting 811 people. This, he said, is a part of the beautification drive being carried out in the twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar, which would be developed as model cities.
Deliberating on the measures to reduce congestion due to parking of vehicles on roadsides, Mr. Tara Chand said three multilayer parking lots are coming up at Bus Stand, Superbazar and Doctor's Lane for which expert consultants have already been finalized. He said JDA is working out the modalities for the project which would not only decongest the roads but would also increase the State revenue generated from use of paid parking facility.
The Deputy Chief Minister said a coordination committee, headed by the Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir, have been constituted to monitor the works being executed by ERA. Setting a timeframe for completion of key development works in the city, Mr. Tara Chand said that work on any road should be carried out in three shifts concurrently so that it is completed in minimum possible time to facilitate the general public. He said works being executed by ERA should be dovetailed with those of NBCC so that repeated disturbance is not caused to road traffic.
Regarding the drive to shift morning vegetable market at Canal Road, the Deputy Chief Minister said that vegetable vendors would be shifted to Bhagwati Nagar morh, adding that platforms for them would be constructed under self-financing scheme. He instructed the officers to identify a suitable site for construction of bathing ghat along Ranbir Canal.
Stressing on landscaping at different pockets of old Jammu city, which is fast losing it's traditional beauty, Mr. Tara Chand instructed the officers to come up with a comprehensive plan to develop green-strips and parks in interior areas of the city. He asked them to complete the work of development of park at Krishnanagar colony, Rajpura. Widening of Akhnoor road, construction of overhead bridge near ITI Complex, Joint Interrogation Centre along Akhnoor road and opposite GGM Science College was also discussed in the meeting.
Highlighting the measures being taken to clean Tawi river, the Deputy Chief Minister said that work on the new sewerage plant to treat the sewage waste of the city before flushing it into Tawi would help in reducing the pollution in the river. He underscored the need of greater awareness among public regarding cleanliness of the city, adding that different departments should also focus on upkeep of public utilities for their future maintenance.
Among others, Commissioner/Secretary Housing and Urban Development Department Mrs. Naseema Lankar, Vice Chairman Jammu Development Authority, Mr. P. K. Pola, Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation, Mr. Mubarak Singh and high officials from ERA, Floriculture departments were present in the meeting.
